Winning article for “A Chance To Bring Home Medicine Buddha — For Free!!”
Tashi delek,
I’m not sure if I’m late on this, but I will try anyway. My name is Kenny Howerton and I’m writing on behalf of my best friend Aaron Brown. 3 months ago he left home to go work on a boat in Alaska to try and raise money to pay off his student loans, and while there he was forced to work in temperatures that were -30 degrees Celsius. Somehow or another he managed to get a hole in his boot causing his foot to get frost bite from the cold to where the hospital had to cut part of his toe off. I was recently informed that he was flown to the hospital again because it got far worse and now they may have to amputate the entire thing. He is going to be unable to work for a long time now, and I know his recovery is going to be long and painful which is why I’m writing in hopes of being awarded one of these statues to give to him when he returns home after he is released from the hospital. I’m personally a very serious practitioner, and he has seen how much I have changed for the better because of it, so I know this would be something he would appreciate and I also truly think because of my faith in the healing powers of Medicine Buddha that it would instill some faith in him for a good recovery.
Attached is a photo of him and I, he is in the middle and I am on the left.

Thank you Rinpoche and Kenny for sharing this story with us.
Tashi Delek Kenny. I really sorry to read about Aaron and what he is going through. Must be very hard for him to go through the pain and losing part of his toe just to earn something to pay off his loan. But 1 thing is for sure, he is very lucky and fortunate to have you as his best friend and writing this article to win him a Medicine Buddha.
May Medicine Buddha heal him, you and everyone around you, internally and physically always.
Tashi delek Tenzin. Thank you for the kind words! When I told him about this he was very ecstatic. He is doing alright currently, but he still isn’t sure if he is going to have to have the entire toe amputated. Unfortunately he is having to now deal with hospitals and lawyers non stop.
Dear Kenny thank you for showing your compassion for others. It is good that you try your best to get a medicine buddha for your friend. i have not heard of people that have ever got a buddha statue for someone who is not well. I rejoice for you Kenny. May your friend recover soon.
Nice story Kenny, thanks for sharing this story I really hope you can win a Medicine Buddha for your friend. Are there a lot of Dharma Centers in your city? Anyways it is great of you to manifest your compassion by taking an action to help your friend.
Thank you for the kind words! There is only one Dharma center in my city which is affiliated with the monastery of my guru Kagyu Thubten Choling. There are a couple more in a town an hour away from me though.
Dear Kenny,
Obviously you are not late for this competition. Infact, you have won a Medicine Buddha for your friend and I am so happy for you.
I am so sorry for what has happened to your friend and sincerely hope that his second trip to the hospital will be the final and he will recover real soon.
I am glad as well that he has such a caring friend like you who took the effort to submit an entry for his benefit. How nice too that you are also a practitioner so that you can give guidance to him using your experiences and knowledge.
May this blessed Medicne Buddha give much blessings to your dear friend.
Oh wow… how kind of you Kenny! You are so thoughtful and I rejoice that you have found Dharma and its benefits and would like to share this with your good friend, Aaron. I am sorry to hear of his situation but I am glad to know he has a good friend in you. I am sure he will be so pleasantly surprised and touched by your thoughtful gesture.
I am sure Medicine Buddha will be of tremendous benefit for him not just externally to help him heal but internally as well 🙂 It is really nice to see people from the outside writing in with their real life experiences and stories for this wonderful opportunity to do more good, to show care and kindness. I rejoice for you Kenny 🙂
Joy,
Thank you for the kind words! I feel very fortunate that my story was chosen, and am so grateful that Rinpoche has given this opportunity. Aaron has been my best friend for ten years now, and I would do anything for that guy.
